The jewel in the crown

02 Apr 2022

Objectives:

• To remove non-recyclable plastic from existing packaging solution
• To streamline amount of packaging solutions required
• To provide a positive customer unboxing experience

Design:
We were approached by a leading Welsh jewellery company to conduct a full packaging audit with two over-arching requirements – to remove the need for plastic bags and plastic void fill and to reduce the number of pack sizes and numbers of packs required to support the companies online retail operations.

Previously the company had purchased its packaging from China which was very plastic heavy and required planning ahead several months to ensure orders were placed and stocks did not run out.

Our solution was to provide two different sized packs with an integral fitting that would support a wide range of jewellery and allow it to be shipped safely and securely to the customer whilst providing a positive customer experience too.

The pack is secured by double sided tape and has a ripper tape for easy opening by the customer. It is manufactured from E150 white test with a white inside. This allows for a branding message to the customer on the inner lid, elevating the brand and unboxing experience. The fitting is adjusted to suit the necessary product whether that is earrings, rings, charms, or watches.

Outcome:

The brief was fulfilled, and expectations exceeded. All plastic has been removed from their ecommerce packaging supply chain.

Furthermore, the simplicity of the pack has streamlined packing and despatch operations reducing time taken as well as supporting stock efficiencies and sustainability credentials. From a customer perspective, the brand has been elevated with sustainable packaging and an unboxing experience that was previously not present. Material usage has decreased, and responsibly sourced materials are now utilised across its packaging. Whilst cost savings have been achieved it was never really about that; the sustainability angle was the driving force behind the changes requested by the client.

They are supplied in flat pack format and palletised for assembly as and when the stock is required. The outer box is supplied with an integral internal fitting.

Facts and Stats:

• 15,000 supplied to the customer each month
• All elements of brief achieved
• Ensured all customer packaging was now recyclable and supported the businesses sustainability messages
