Careers in Packaging

Packaging is everywhere!
Everything we buy, everything we have delivered – there’s some sort of packaging associated with it – whether it’s a tray that your tomatoes are in at the supermarket, or a huge, printed box that your TV arrives in.
So, whilst it’s everywhere, in all elements of our daily lives, we think its fair to say that people generally don’t think about where it comes from. Unless you work in packaging! And then, if you do, that’s where the fun really begins!
One of the main things that people will think about when considering a career in packaging is the design element. It’s often a complex process that requires great product knowledge and creativity. Some elements of packaging design require artistic flair whereas design in corrugated also requires constructional design. It’s about how products fit in boxes, how the product is protected, how the different types of board do what is necessary, and how we can make the outside (and often the inside) look visually appealing for our customers and the consumer.
However, design is just one small element of keeping a packaging company running.
As part of the design process, it will need costing, then it will go through administrative processes such as order processing, customer services, invoicing, and finance. When ready for production it requires skilled machine operators to make the box, Forklift Truck drivers to load the product on to our HGVs for delivery, and a driver of the HGV to deliver boxes all over the UK.
In addition, we have roles in production and transport planning, warehouse administration, sales, health and safety, quality assurance and senior roles which often include Finance Manager, Production Manager, Warehouse Manager, and Managing Director.
Many of our sites have been manufacturing boxes for decades and employ people from the local community. Indeed, many of our employees have been with their respective sites for several years.
This is something that the business is committed to driving forward; to train and develop the next generation of packaging professionals through work experience, apprenticeships, and investment in existing staff.
Gavin Richardson, CEO, Boxes and Packaging commented; “Packaging is a superb industry to work in and offers such a wider variety of roles. It’s an industry that has grown exponentially in the last five years or so, especially the corrugated sector, as businesses and consumers look to make responsible choices and select recyclable packaging over that which is hard to recycle. We expect the corrugated industry to continue to play a significant role in the supply chains of the UK and beyond for many years to come.”
