Made in Birmingham

21 Oct 2024

There has been a box making factory at our Birmingham site for over 100 years; long before it became part of the Logson Group in 2005 and was re-named Boxes and Packaging (Birmingham).

A lot of boxes and people have passed through its doors over the decades and the current team of 32, several of which are from local communities and have been with the business for many years, is headed up by Managing Director, Peter Gosling.

The site on Salford Street was developed in 1900. We know of re-developments that happened in 1989 and 1998 which has given a total of 40,000 sq ft of factory, warehouse and offices and we can trace back at least five other corrugated companies that operated from the building before the Logson acquisition.

In the heart of the West Midlands and the City of Birmingham, the site is ideally located to serve the local area with a wide range of corrugated packaging solutions. It’s just a third of a mile from Spaghetti Junction, three quarters of a mile from Aston Villa Football Club, and supports many businesses in the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and beyond to continue to grow and prosper in a variety of sectors.

Within the walls of the site is a hive of box making activity from a range of machinery that brings diverse capabilities. In addition to the manufacturing of standard FEFCO boxes the team creates bespoke designs and solutions (including RRP, SRP, POS and heavy duty transit) and has the added ability to work in large format boxes due to the presence of a Box King machine within its portfolio.

Other machines include a 3.2m Dong Fang 2 colour rotary die cutter, an S&S Printer/flatbed diecutter, Bobst Visioncut and a range of stitching and gluing machines. Its range of manufacturing capabilities is complemented by an in-house designer who brings technical and product knowledge to support customers with their requirements. And, as part of a large group it has the resilience to work with other Boxes and Packaging sites and companies within the Logson Group to fulfil customer demands.

“Boxes and Packaging (Birmingham) is a well-established business with a strong customer base and an experienced team,” said Peter Gosling, Site MD. “I feel privileged to be the current custodian of the business and create the next chapter in its 125-year history. We have clearly defined goals to continue the growth of the business, the ongoing development of the team and to build strong relationships with the regional business community.”

It’s customer portfolio includes a number of household names, industry greats and global blue chip companies and the team support the supply chain in a number of ways to ensure products reach customers and production lines when required.

“Sustainability and recyclability are hugely important to many businesses and we continue to see a shift towards business exploring and choosing corrugated as their preferred packaging when they fully understand the flexibility and capabilities it has,” said Peter. “Working with customers to help them utilise corrugated to protect their product and promote their brand is at the heart of what we do each and every day and we look forward to creating packaging partnerships with more businesses in the coming months and years.”
