How to work from home successfully

18 Mar 2020

These are without a doubt unprecedented times.

Employees across the nation have taken the move to work from home wherever possible, including members of our teams across the UK.

But after the practicalities have been achieved; remote access, agreed times to call in, daily reporting etc. how does working from home really work and how can you ensure you remain productive.

We’ve had a number of employees that have taken the advantage of technology over the last few years meaning that they have been able to work from home. However, let’s face it; no matter how convenient it is, there is nothing like social interaction. Now that has been replaced by social distancing and some British grit and determination, we share some top tips from those that have working from home effectively sorted.

Have a designated space

Whilst a home office is perfect, and there has been a growing trend for creating them over the last 12 months or so, we recognise that this may not be practical for everyone; especially when the need has arisen at short notice. To ensure concentration and productivity is not compromised, designate a home office space that you can all your own. It could be your kitchen or dining room table, or perhaps a makeshift table in the corner of a spare room or one that is not used so often. Just find your space and make sure other members of the household know that this is now your office.

Keep a work/life balance

It can be hard to be disciplined when working from home when it comes to time keeping. Some find that the distractions of home are too much, whilst others see it as an opportunity to work all hours of the day and night. Bringing structure into your day and only working from your designated space can really help keep the balance.

Look after yourself

Working from home, lack of contact with colleagues, more contact with family and uncertain times can be a melting pot for people to lose focus on what’s important. Key to this is looking after yourself. So we recommend that you don’t work in your PJs (however tempted), eat as well and as healthily as you possible can and get fresh air wherever possible. Used to going to the gym? Explore the scores of home workouts that are available to do either in your home or your garden, there are some fantastic ones available for beginners or those that are well trained already.

Create a new routine

Us humans can be real creatures of habit so, if you work best when you have a routine, just create a new one. Adopt a morning exercise routine, take a break for lunch, make contact with colleagues perhaps via conference call to ensure work relationships are maintained, and use the time to learn. Learn how to be more efficient, learn about your industry and learn new skills that will all help in your current role and support your business.

Most importantly, though stay safe and look after each other.
