Audit scores show impressive progress

18 Jul 2019

In 2017 our ‘Make it Safe’ campaign was launched to raise the profile of health and safety across Boxes and Packaging. This was developed further in 2018 with the creation of our ‘Make it Safe’ Vision, “We will excel in our Health and Safety Performance and work towards zero harm.” A key objective of the vision is to ensure all Boxes and Packaging sites are operating an effective Health and Safety Management system.

We have recently completed a series of audits across all of our sites to benchmark the effectiveness of our systems, give impartial advice and help to identify continuous improvement actions and areas of best practice that can be shared across the group. All of our sites have made significant progress since the first series of audits back in 2016 with the B&P group achieving an average score of 81%.

“We have seen some marked improvements at all our sites with some making significant enhancements to their operations to ensure the requirements of the audit were met,” said Mark Ryan Logson Group Health and Safety Manager. “Safety excellence is now becoming embedded in all our leaders, line managers and our staff and this will continue to drive even more improvements ahead of the next audits in early 2020.”

All areas of operations were audited as well as the administrative procedures associated with this. In addition, the implementation of a Workplace Transport project has delivered other benefits to safety within the sites including improvements in housekeeping and behaviours.

“This cohesive, joined up approach to Health and Safety is without doubt having a significant impact and I, together with other key members of the senior leadership team will continue to support teams at each site to ensure the standards remain at this level and indeed, continue to improve as we work towards our goal of zero harm to colleagues, visitors and contractors,” said Mark. “It is very important that we keep up the momentum and strive to get even better.”

Three key objectives that remain at the very heart of our Make it Safe Vision are:
• Operate an effective health and safety management system
• Effectively control significant risks
• Continually improve the health and safety culture
Mark concluded; “With the continued drive and enthusiasm that our teams are now demonstrating we are hopeful of further improvements and initiatives that deliver a real difference.”
