Happy Birthday Doncaster!
19 Jul 2017
It is 10 years to the month since our Doncaster site became part of the Boxes and Packaging group but it is a little-known fact that there has been a corrugated packaging plant on the very same site for 40 years!
It was in 1977 that two local business men, Joe Laurens and Dan O’Brien, who had been working together in the packaging industry, decided to create a brand-new business. The first decade saw the business flourish and the building was doubled in size to its current footprint to cope with demand.
This 40,000 sq ft unit, on a four-acre site, is where all manufacturing operations still take place today and it has coped with considerable throughput during its time. Indeed, early in the new millennium the then Doncaster Packaging hit its peak operating period – three shifts, five days a week – a time that many of its current employees can remember. Disappointingly, this all-time high was followed by a period of troubled trading with a couple of new owners in short succession. It was acquired by the Logson Group in 2007 and became known as Boxes and Packaging (Doncaster). Recently a 7,000 sq ft dedicated assembly area and a 52,000 sq ft distribution centre has consolidated its operations driving growth and prosperity.
Several members of the current team can remember all chapters in the businesses history and Clive Eastwood, its longest serving employee, has clocked up an amazing 40 years joining the business just weeks after it started trading. The stable and loyal team has other employees with admirable career longevity – 28 members of the team have over 10 years’ service and eight of these have over 25 years!
The business continues to reinvent itself to cope with consumer and customer demand across Yorkshire, Humber region and the North East. In the last ten years, as part of the Boxes and Packaging group, it has evolved from a traditional box making plant which made and delivered medium volume cases, to one which is now based around design led innovation and complex supply chain solutions. This has resulted in a portfolio of blue chip companies as customers who enjoy bespoke packaging solutions and strong relationships with the Doncaster team.
With an enviable reputation for quality and service which has been pivotal in delivering strong growth and business security, the team at Doncaster are well placed to drive forward performance and growth for a long and prosperous future.
Stacey Austin, Doncaster Managing Director commented; “As a Doncaster lad, born and bred, I am immensely proud to have spent 25 years working throughout the business in a variety of roles which culminated in my becoming Managing Director ten years ago. We are in a very strong position with excellent sites and a wide range of equipment, but best of all we have a fantastic, loyal workforce who make our business what it is. I am proud of our past, but even more excited about our future. We have plans to invest in new equipment and grow the business further and I fully expect the next 40 years to be even more successful.”
