Boxes and Packaging and Jardin Visit to BAE Systems Samlesbury

Managing Directors from each Boxes and Packaging site were extended a warm welcome recently when they visited BAE’s Samlesbury site and were welcomed by Howard Tattersall, Safety, Health and Environment Manager.

Following a presentation from Howard, the team were given a site tour taking in numerous buildings on the airfield, including machine shops, carbon fibre manufacture, Typhoon and F-35. The team picked up various ideas from a manufacturing site very different from their own to take back to their respective sites.

David Grainger Group Health and Safety Director commented; “Sharing ideas, information and experience is a vital part of business growth and development and it was very interesting to see how such a large site is operated. It was a very useful visit and our thanks go to Howard and his team for their informative presentation and allowing us to experience such a unique part of British manufacturing heritage.”

Similarities can be drawn between Boxes and Packaging and BAE as both companies remain committed to robust Health and Safety policies encouraging employee involvement and systems development.

BAE’s Salmesbury site occupies a former airfield between Preston and Blackburn in Lancashire. It employs approximately 4,500 people and manufactures parts for aircrafts such as the Hawk, Typhoon, Tornado and the F-35 Lightning II.

Historically, aircraft such as the Handley Page Hampden and Halifax were built there and latterly the De Havilland Vampire, English Electric Lightning and Canberra also rolled off the production lines.
