One in a million!
18 Oct 2019
Head of Operations and HR at Boxshop, Alison Milligan, is the latest of our team members to complete a charity challenge; this time taking one million steps to raise money and awareness for Diabetes UK.
Alison joined in the annual challenge, which takes place between 1st July and 30th September each year, and has raised almost £500 – the same amount, as number of miles, that one million steps equates to.
“This has been a great challenge for me; one which I’ve really enjoyed and which I have managed to fit in around my busy lifestyle, indeed it was a great way to relax after a busy day” said Alison. “Each of the thirteen weeks needed me to take almost 77,000 steps which was just under 11,000 (5/6 miles) a day which seemed much more achievable than the one million target!”
Alison, who has Type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed only two years ago, took to walking around her local area in the summer months, taking advantage of the light nights and slightly better weather and made the most of her challenge walking with her husband and their dog for company. On particularly rainy days, the treadmill in the gym was an ideal substitution.
“Having Diabetes is a serious condition that needs to be managed correctly and I’m not sure that people really appreciate this,” said Alison. “Since the challenge concluded I have managed to keep walking and know that the benefits of regular daily exercise, healthy eating and good sleep all help towards managing the condition effectively.”
Over 4.7 million people live with Diabetes in the UK and it can have a significant impact on daily life. In 2019, 17,000 people registered to take part in the One Million Step challenge and have raised, so far, over £650,000 to support people living with diabetes.
